Love, Hate & Other Filters (Non-Spoiler Review)

Love, Hate & Other FiltersTitle: Love, Hate & Other Filters
Author: Samira Ahmed
My rating: 4 .5/5 stars
Date Read: 2/19/18

Love, Hate & Other Filters is one of my most anticipated releases of 2018 and it did not disappoint. This book tackles important issues like Islamophobia.

Our main character Maya is a senior in high school and she is an American Indian Muslim teen. Her parents want her to go to a college near home and marry a Muslim boy that they thing is suitable for her while she wants to go to NYU and study film, something she knows her parents would disprove. There is also a terrorist attack and Maya has no relation to the main suspect, she doesn't even know who he is but he shares the same last name as her and people start to treat her differently.

First off family is a really important part of the story. Unlike many YA books, the parents are existent. Maya's parents care for her in their own special way. She also has a very good relationship with her aunt and I really thought that added a lot to the story.

I have heard people talk about this book here and there and after reading the synopsis I knew I wanted to read it. The author is from India which made me sure the representation would be accurate when writing about an Indian American teen. It deals with though topics that are not usually in YA such as people hating others for their religion. It is definitely a must read. If you like The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas or plan on reading that book please add this one to your TBR.

Love, Hate & Other Filters is under 300 pages therefore this book is perfect for readathons, reading slump, or a perfect book to read when you don't have a lot of time to read. It is not a fluffy read even though it had its cute romance moment. It took me a few chapters to become attached to Maya and the story but after that it was incredible so if you are not liking the first few chapters keep pushing through.

Violet is Maya's best friend and it is evident that she cares about Maya and that Maya cares about her too. I thing they are the perfect best friends and have a very strong relationship. Literally I could go on about this if this was a spoilery review.

Overall I highly recommend this book and I think it is am important read. This is also Ahmed's debut novel and it was incredible. The writing is amazing along with the characters. I will definitely be reading her other books in the future!

They Both Die at the End (Spoiler Free) Review

They Both Die at the EndTitle: They Both Die at the End
Author: Adam Silvera
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Date Read: 2/17/18

School book club pick for the month of February

They Both Die at the End is the second Adam Silvera book I read. The first being More Happy Than Not. I found More Happy Than Not mediocre and was not planning on reading another Adam Silvera book. Since it is the school book club pick of the month, I decided to give Silvera another chance and I am glad I did because I really really enjoyed this book.

In this book there is this company called Death-Cast that calls you the day you are going to die to let you know you are going to die. Both of the main characters Mateo and Rufus get the phone call. They meed using the app Last Friend. This app was created to help people who are going to die that day, meet others in the same area who have gotten the call. This book takes place slightly less than 24 hours and we follow both Mateo and Rufus's POV. Also in this book we have random POV of minor characters that don't seem important but it added so much more to the story.

In a way this book reminded me a lot of The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. Both of these books take place in a day, the POV of minor character sprinkled in, and diversity.

When reading this book, I knew the characters would die at the end. It is not a spoiler because if you read the title it says They Both Die at the end and Adam Silvera likes to write sad books.

I hate when this happens, when you prefer one POV over another, and it happened again in this one. I liked reading from Mateo's perspective more than Rufus's. In general I think I like Mateo a bit more than him. But regardless I still liked reading from Rufus's POV.

Overall I would recommend this book. If you cry a lot when reading you will most likely cry when reading this book. If you don't cry a lot during books, like me, you probably won't cry since I did not shed a tear, though I did feel very sad on the inside when I finished the book.

A Court of Wings and Ruin (Non-Spoiler+Spoiler) Review

A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3)Title:A Court of Wings and Ruin
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Series: A Court of Thorns and Roses #3
My rating: 4.5/5 stars
Date Read: 2/13/17

ACOWAR is the third book and kind of the final book in the first half of the ACOTAR series. There is a novella coming out about the events after this book following Feyre and Rhysand. From what I've heard the second half of the series follows different characters from a different court.

I was going to marathon all three books that were out last year but I finished ACOMAF the day before Lord of Shadows and was torn between reading that book or this one. I ultimately and obviously ended up reading Lord of Shadows which is a good thing because it allowed me to enjoy ACOWAR more. It is also one of my top 10 books I want to read this year.

This book took me over a week to read. I was not reading as much due to the amount of school work I had but I did still enjoy it a lot. I also found the beginning of the story very slow. Nothing was happening. In fact most of the third book is build up for the epic ending. That ending was phenomenal however a little too convenient for some things. (See spoiler section)

What kept me interested during most of the book was the characters and the fact that we get a glimpse of other characters from other courts. I found it so interesting to see the differences between each court.

The characters were so good and I loved most of them. I mean I still hate Tamlin but not as much as I did in the first one TBH. Still not liking him much. Cassian is my favorite followed by Aziel when talking about characters. In fact Rhysand is actually not that swoon worthy to me and he is not one of my favorite characters in the book but I still liked him. Also Nesta is amazing. I was not a fan of Nesta in books 1 and 2 but in this book, she is freaking amazing.

***SPOILERS***
Okay spoiler time. All my other spoilery thoughts in bullet points because it is faster than writing them in paragraph form.

- NESSIAN. I think I like Nessian more than Feysand. Unpopular opinion I know.
-Also Nesta is the one to kill Hybern was a twist I did not predict till a few pages before it happened.
- Does Elain like Azriel or Lucian or neither?
-The next book (the one after ACOFAS) may about the Day Court or Autumn Court.
- Reasons
1) Day Court is Night Courts closest ally.
2) Helion Lucian's dad?! I mean Feyre thinks so and she has evidence to why she thinks that.
- Ending too convenient- I mean why revive Rhysand and leave all the others dead in the field. I mean a little biased on who they save.
- Nesta finally admits she has feelings for Cassian.

The False Prince (Spoiler Free) Review

The False Prince (The Ascendance Trilogy #1)
Title: The False Prince
Series: The Ascendance Trilogy #1
My rating: 4 /5 stars
Date Read: 2/4/18

The False Prince has been on my GR TBR or awhile and I finally decided to read it and am so glad I did because it is amazing and definitely more people should read it.

In this book there is a nobleman who recruits four orphans to potentially pretend the king's long lost child Prince Jaron. In a way they have to compete for the role. The main character Sage is one of the boys that Conner chooses and he follow his point of view.

Sage is a character that in a way is reckless. He speaks his mind constantly not thinking before he speaks and acts and definitely not thinking about the consequences and I actually enjoyed that about him although sometimes I find myself annoyed at him too.

I enjoyed the story line of the book and the way it was executed. I thought this is a very solid first book in a trilogy and the other books have lots of potential. The first 60 pages were very boring and I wanted to DNF it but I pushed myself and I am glad I did. I understand in a fantasy book, especially the first one, to develop the world and in some books, a magic system. Sorry no magic in this book.

I enjoyed the writing style. The writing flowed well and worked for the story, not being over descriptive while giving you enough information to visualize the setting and the characters.

The False Prince is a short fantasy, about 350 pages. It was nice to read a short fantasy book since so many of them *cough*ACOMAF, QoS, The Name of the Wind*cough* are so long. It was refreshing.

I am the type of person when reading who tries to predict what is going to happen in books. When I just started getting into reading, I sucked. Now I am predicting the ending of lots of books and sometimes it is not a bad thing. I did find the ending of this book predictable and I did predict the ending towards the beginning of the story but I still love this book.

If you are a reader that usually reads fantasy books you probably be able to predict things that happen but I still would recommend this book. Definitely a read that makes it to my under hyped recommendations list.

February Wrap-Up (2018)

Today I will be doing my February wrap-up and March TBR. In the month of February I read a total of 8 books. So far 2018 has been a very good reading year.

Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)The first book I read in the month of February is Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi, which is the second book in the Shatter Me series. I enjoyed Unravel Me more than Shatter Me. The main reason I read this book is because of Kenji. Kenji was and still is my favorite character in this series so far. Warner though may be challenging him in the next book. In the first book I did not like him at all, but now, I like Warner a bit more. I still despise Adam and I am not the biggest fan of Juliette but I don't hate her. Overall really enjoyed this book and will be reading the last book hopefully soon. I gave it 4/5 stars.

The False Prince (The Ascendance Trilogy, #1)The next book I read was The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen which I gave 4/5 stars as well. This book has been on my GR TBR for awhile and I finally decided to pick it up and I loved it. It took me a little bit to become invested in the story but once I was hooked I was hooked. Yes I did manage to predict some things that happen in the story, but it did not really effect my overall enjoyment of the story. I really liked the characters and the world and I will be picking up the next book in the trilogy soon hopefully. This book is definitely under hyped and more people should read it.

A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3)Another book I read in the month of February is A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas. I did it guys. I finally read ACOWAR. Overall I did really enjoy it and I thought it was a solid conclusion. I really love this world and the characters and will be reading the other half of the trilogy series. I do not know what is going on with this series anymore. I do prefer ACOMAF over this book but I do like this one more than the first. Yep ACOTAR is my least favorite in the main trilogy. Also Nesta is amazing. I cannot believe I use to not like her. I totally ship her with Cassian. Also I like both Cassian and Azriel more than Rhysand. Sorry not sorry.

They Both Die at the EndThe next book I read was my school's book club pick and that is They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera. This book is sad. I did not cry but it was sad. In this book people now can figure out the day they are going to die the day they die. The person who is going to die receives a phone call from Death-Cast alerting them that they are going to die. Both of the main characters Mateo and Rufus get the call. I did enjoy Silvera's first book More Happy Than Not but I enjoyed They Both Die at the end so much more. It also reminded me a lot of The Sun is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon, so if you like that book you would also probably enjoy this one. 4/5 stars.

Love, Hate & Other Filters
Another book I read is Love, Hate, and Other Filters by Samira Ahmend. I love this book and gave it 4.5/5 stars. It deals with important topics like Islamophobia which is usually not mentioned in YA. The main character Maya is a Muslim Indian American and she is expected to be her parent's perfect child. She wants to go to film school in New York while her parents want her to stay local and go to a school close to home. If you like the Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, give this book a shot because both of them deal with very relevant and important topics in the world today.

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)My next read was a reread and that is Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. Naturally I love this reread and gave it a 5/5 stars. I am currently rereading all the shadowhunter books in preparation for the release of Queen of Air and Darkness. Yes I am already on my reread but hey at least I have started it. Because people constantly ask, yes you are suppose to read this series before reading the last three books of The Mortal Instruments. The Infernal Devices is my favorite out of all the Shadowhunter books. The Dark Artifices are catching up though so we shall see. Overall I love this world and love the characters especially.

Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars, #1)
I actually never planned on reading this book but I needed a short fast read and it was available on overdrive and I heard good things about it and that book is Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard. I gave this book 2/5 stars. I had many problems with it and I found so many of all the main characters actions annoying and some of them so obviously wrong yet they still do it. I am curious to see who A is though and I may give the second book a chance if I need something quick to read. The series is also 16 books long so will I continue. I have no clue.

The Darkest Part of the ForestThe last and final book I read in the month of February is The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black. I started this book a few years ago but put it down because I was not in the mood to read it. I was planning on reading The Cruel Prince and wanted to read this book first and am so glad I gave it another chance because I really liked it. I did find the main character annoying and did not like her much. I think it is because of some her actions but to be honest I have no clue. I love the world the most though and I am excited to read her other books.

That is my February Wrap-Up. Thank you for reading and I hope to see you in my next post!
