Title: Second Chance Summer
Author: Morgan Matson
Date Read: 3/23/17
Rating: 4.5/5 stars
I love this book! I think I am officially out of my reading slump. Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson is my favourite book by hers I read by her. I almost cried. I felt tears in my eyes. I never cry during books and I very rarely have tears in my eyes when reading. This says a lot!
Second Chance Summer follows a girl name Taylor Edwards. She has and older brother Warren and a younger sister Gelsey. Something happens to her family and her father wants to spend the summer in their summer home located in Pennsylvania. Taylor hasn't been there since she was twelve. At the lake she sees people she thought she left behind, such as her former best friend, Lucy, and her first boyfriend Henry Crosby. She learns more about her family and she realizes that with her friends she has a second chance of befriending both of them.
This book is more than a romance story. Family plays a big part of the story. I feel like the family dynamic adds a lot to the story.
I really like Morgan Matson's writing style. This book is written in first person. The way Matson writes her characters makes me like all of them. Every single one of them. My favourite is probably Taylor and Lucy.
There is also flashbacks. I liked the flashbacks because they helped me understand more of Taylor's backstory. Sometimes however the flashbacks come when chapters leave on cliff hangers and I end up skimming them because wanted to go back to the present day.
The family dynamics are probably my favourite part of the story. Usually contemporary books only focus on the romance. It is a refresher to have a book that is not all about the romance.
If you are looking to start Matson's books I recommend reading them in publication order because sometimes you get a little inside on some of the characters from her other books.
Thank you for reading and I hope to see you in my next post.
